Social Networks face challenges in India

Just few days ago, Orkut was in news in India after a High Court instructed Maharashtra government to take up the case of India hate message forum on Orkut. Now TOI reports that CID's Cyber crime cell has 3 cases registered with it where professionals claim they are being defaced on Orkut.

This is one of the challenges social networks will face in the coming months. It would have been nice if the networks were kept closed and remain invite only which will preserve its integrity and becomes easier to manage.

Autonomy Video Search to enter Indian Market

After tasting the success in Asia's largest market, China, Autonomy wants a pie of Indian online video search market. The Independent reports that, Autonomy in joint venture with OpenV in China is the biggest online video search engine.

Mike Lynch, CEO of Autonomy said,
"India presents an opportunity for Autonomy as search giants such as Google are not dominant in the region because of the complexity of local languages"

Hopefully, someone will help the Indians search Text and Videos in their languages.

BSNL to offer on Demand Gaming

BSNL Broadband is all set to offer on demand games to its broadband subscribers. BSNL is little short of 1 Million broadband subscribers and has already started upgrading its network to support another 3 Million users. Once 50% of this capacity is reached, it will start upgrading the network for another 3 Million lines.

With falling bandwidth prices, the situation of Broadband is still pathetic in India, especially in Bangalore where BSNL officers put you on waitlist for few months. BSNL in order to increase the ARPU, is set to offer on demand gaming in the first quarter of 2007. [VIA ET]

Orkut in trouble for hate community on India

ET reports that, The Aurangabad bench of Mumbai High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to issue notice to Google for the alleged spread of hatred about India by its social network service `Orkut'.

The order was issued by Justice A P Deshpande and Justice R M Borde Monday in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by local Advocate Yugant R Marlapalle.

Orkut is a mere platform to create communities and upon complaints, they usually remove objectionable content. So their is no question of Orkut spreading things against India. The community URL when I checked Orkut was http://www.orkut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=14773994 I hope the matter doesn't get too serious.

I Build. I Bond - ibibo community networking site goes live

The social or community networking bug has now bitten Indian online entrepreneur's. MTV India recently launched Meet or Delete, ibibo today launched it's public beta and you can use their blog and photo sharing web service just like Blogger and Flickr. ibibo is a part of MIH India promoted by Naspers.

Ashish Kashyap, CEO, MIH India, said
"We have just launched the beta version of our products. We will add four to six new applications to Ibibo.com. Our aim will be to empower the users to come together and network. We will be launching another three to four products within six months’ time". He further added, "“We have launched these products keeping an eye organizational momentum and to show that we can build products very fast. We have built these products within just 20 days"

When asked why users would join such a new platform for blogging and photo-sharing when there were established players in the domain like Blogger and Flickr, Kashyap said, "“Our value proposition will be clear when the product portfolio will be complete. Our focus will be on local Indian community not the global audience. We will continue to be innovative and nimble, which I don't see in most of such sites. Most importantly, we will be disproportionately rewarding our users, which is a first among such networking sites"

This will be a very good competitor to MTV's Meet or Delete as Mr Kashyap also wants to spend heavily on advertising and marketing.

Sabeer Bhatia's Arzoo is Re-Born

Hotmail co-founder, Sabeer Bhatia an innovator then is back in action without any innovation. Bhatia's earlier Arzoo (desire) to provide companies access to a global network of technology experts who offer real-time problem-solving assistance for engineering, IT and tech support applications was shattered when the Dot Com Boom went Bust. Check out the Screenshot of Arzoo.com being shut-down then.

This time Bhatia's Arzoo is to be an online Travel Agent. (LOL) Arzoo.com is now offering Airline Tickets, Hotel Rooms and Holiday Packages. IMHO, this was the last thing I would expect from Bhatia. Just yesterday I had blasted all these major portals on having single track mind. So you can very well expect Arzoo Matrimony or Arzoo dating from Sabeer Bhatia next :-)
